In true Momma form, my natural girlfriend styles her daughters hair in natural hairstyles. She does these twists that I just love and after my niece CUT MY DAUGHTERS HAIR this weekend (deep breathing) instead of her typical bushy braids (I canNOT cornrow but I try) I decided to try twisting my girl's hair myself. Here is what I did:
- I wash her hair because it was a bushy mess
- Put conditioner and coconut oil in her hair for moisture
- I parted her hair in rows as if I was going to braid it
- I then took small square sections (parted with my fingers) and split it in two (for twist, instead of the three sections for braids)
- I twisted the pieces together then pulled the pieces all the way up (tightening the twist) each time, so twist, pull/tighten, twist, pull/tighten... (I've found that if you don't tighten it will unravel)
- Once I got to the end I just wound her ends around my finger for a little twist/spiral action.
At night I baggy her hair (put a shower cap on) under her silk scarf so in the morning it is still bouncy and fly!
I LOVE HER HAIR! And she was running around shaking what her Momma gave her!
Twisting her hair FINALLY gave me a hairstyle that she can wear with her hair down and it not puff up into the madness I know it can become.
I stretched her hair down to show her that she has long hair. Living in Arizona she see's all the bone straight blond hair and she thinks she is bald (at 4!)... I showed her that her hair is longer than all of her classmates and I imagine they are touching my babies hair right now (grrrrrr).
The style is so flexible, she can wear it up or down and it is the closest thing I will get to dreading her hair (I want to but we all know the lasting effects of that).
I wanted to share this not so quick but really easy and rewarding hairstyle with your readers, here is a picture!
Finally a victory with my daughters beautifully natural hair!

Hi there, I read your blog all the time but I don't think I've ever commented.
I use this method on my daughter's hair all the time. She loves it and calls it her "rubber band springy hair." As an added bonus, I add castor oil on top of the heaping amounts of conditioner and coocnut oil that I use. My daughter sleeps with her bonnet on a satin pillowcase so you KNOW that bonnet is always on the floor each and every morning. But since I sleep with a plastic bag under my bonnet, I think I'll try that with her also. I tell my daughter that her hair is the BEST type of hair b/c she can where it bouncy (springy rubber band like) or straight if she wants. She has options and you KNOW how children LOVE their options. I tell her every day (and I mean EVERYDAY)that people with super straight hair can only wear their hair straight and that after awhile, that's SO BORING !!!! Maybe if you tell your daughter that, she'll pass it onto her friends and you might even get some hair customers out of it....lol. I have a cousin that lives in AZ so I know what you're going through.

I really LOVE IT!!!! Maybe your niece cutting her hair was a 'blessing in desguise' (excuse me if that is not the correct spelling, but you know what I am saying). Tell all the aters to please be excused!

What I found interesting is the people who have asked me about her hair ask if I used a bee's wax or some sort of gel to make it stay.
NOPE, just twist and pull and it creates a natural tension and it holds itself.
There are a ton of cute and natural styles out there, I have a classmate that told me her teen daughter wants to relax her hair because she is running out of cute and sassy styles. I told her NOOOOOOOO!!!! and I gave her a few of my favorite hair blogs INCLUDING but not limited to LHDC.net!
The resources are out there, we just have to care to share!

Super cute style! I'm glad to see that you have stayed committed to keeping your kids' hair cute & natural. A lot of people don't think of saying those two words together LOL.
