You got your boots, your coats, your hats, scarves and gloves...but did you remember to make sure your HAIR is ready for the winter, too???
Here are some tips to help keep your hair in tip top shape during the winter:
- Use a humidifier to help keep the air in your home moist and hyrdrated. If you don't have a
humidifier, you can create humidity in your home by boiling a large pot of water on the stove.
- Wool and cotton are very damaging fabrics to your hair since they can snag and pull your hair (these materials literally ROB your hair of prescious moisture!); when wearing hats and scarves make sure that there is a satin lining in it or simply put on a satin scarf before you put on your hat.
- Use less shampoo. Using less shampoo doesn't mean cleanse less often, it means find alternatives to cleansing with shampoo like co-washing.
- Opt for no-contact styles (like a bun) rather than wearing your hair down. As much as you might like your hair to blow in the wind, it is better to have your hair up and protected than it is to potentially cause wind-damage and breakage to your hair.
- Don't leave out the leave-in! If you usually use a liquid leave-in conditioner, switch to a creamy leave-in during the winter and use it daily on the length and ends of your hair.
- The winter is no time to skimp on your conditioning. Make sure you are deep conditioning your hair weekly with a moisture based conditioner with heat.
- As always, STEP AWAY FROM THE HEAT! The cold climate will attempt to dry out your hair and scalp as it is and you don't need to assist by upping your heat usage. Rather than using blow dryers and flat-irons, opt for air drying and roller/silk wrapping for straight styles.

I don't know LHDC, but I am beginning to think that we as black women do wayyyy too much to our hair. From 'whippin it up' and spending hours in the shop, can't sleep right because we can't mess our hair; to just trying to keep it on our heads, it's just too much!
I mean a humidifier JUST for my hair. Can you see me picking up an Ionic Breeze JUST for my hair (I know the other benifits but the purchase would be for my hair)!
My lifestyle is centered around the health and vitality of my hair, I mean life stops if my hair is jeopardized... is it that serious, dang.
