With the holiday season officially in full swing, it is so easy to neglect your hair in light of all the more important things going on...last minute holiday shopping, family dinners, the kids' Christmas speeches and performances, cooking for a small army, decorating the house...
I know how it is when you feel like there just isn't enough time in the day to get what needs to be done, done! Just like the other aspects of your life, rather than foregoing and neglecting your hair completely for the next month, prioritize the aspects of your hair care regimen during this extremely busy holiday season!
I believe all aspects of a hair care regimen are important, but perhaps the top 3 things you need to make sure get done are:
- Moisturizing
- Cleansing
- Low to NO heat usage
By far the most important aspect of of your regimen is moisture! Make sure you are moisturizing your hair with a water-based moisturizer every day! I also recommend sealing with an oil daily; especially if you live in very cold and dry climates. The oil just adds an extra layer of protection to your strands. If you can keep your hair well moisturized, it is ok to skip the conditioning aspect of your regimen - but JUST until the holidays are over!
With the amount of product that is used for many holiday hair styles, it will be important to keep your hair and scalp clean and free of product build-up. You may not have the time (or the desire) to keep up with your daily cleansing schedule - if that is what you do - but your hair and scalp need to be cleansed at least once per week. You can strech your cleasning to 7 days but that is it!
If you aren't conditioning, use a shampoo alternative like co-washing instead to ensure that your hair is retaining the maximum amount of moisture over the next few weeks.
As tempting as it is to pull out that iron to straghten your hair daily - or even weekly, DON'T!!!!! You would be surprised how much of your length will be compromised if you subject your tresses to over-usage of heat - even if it is for only a few weeks. Explore other ways to straighten your hair like silk or roller wrapping. Or, opt for curly styles and updo's; you can always wig-it, too!
Remember, consistency is KEY to reaching your goals!
Good luck with your holiday hair care and enjoy!!!

Great advice. The holidays have me ready to relax and get it over with! I want some fly holiday hair, this post has talked me off the ledge. I think I am going to get a wig. I am tired of this afro on my head. I need a change.

LHDC: Hi, T! No, I don't moisturize just for the sake of moisturizing (though I try to make sure I do it daily)...Once I got to "know" my hair I was able to adjust my moisturizing schedule according to when my hair needs it. When I first started, though, I moisturized EVERY day - sometimes twice a day! Moisture for me is one thing that I CANNOT slip up on.

Do you moisturize even if your hair doesnt feel like it needs it?
