Reader: My kids are adopted, all boys, all black American. I am not. My 3 yr old cannot grow hair... he grows fuzz. Any suggestions? One of the boys' birth mothers suggested Sulfer 8 shampoo and cream. Will that help? My husband and I have a blog about raising kids of color in rural ohio If you want to see our little men:

LHDC: Thanks so much for your message! Your boys are absolutely HANDSOME!!! I love chocolate babies :) Sulfur has long been touted in the Black community as a "miracle hair-grower" but at this point I wouldn't be concerned with your 3 year-old's fuzz. But if you'd like to establish some bonding time and stimulate his little hair follicles at the same time, I'd suggest massaging his scalp a few times per week with a natural oil; my favorites are extra virgin olive oil and unrefined virgin coconut oil. The massage can be a short as a few minutes to as long as you like; and you won't need much oil - a little goes a long way!
I hope this helps! Your little guy will have a headful of beautiful, thick hair in no time!

Hi Katie,
I hate to sound critical of you, because I really think the fact that you have adopted black children is great, but I'm concerned that you refer to your child's hair as "fuzz". I checked out your blog and saw his pictures. From what I can see, his hair is typical of many black people. There is nothing wrong with it. My concern is that your feelings about his hair will ultimately damage his self esteem.
My advice would be to co-wash his hair with a drug store conditioner such as Herbal Essence Hello Hydration every few days. His hair will grow longer with time. I would recommend coconut oil, but because he does not have much hair, you would just be putting it on his scalp. Scalps don't need oil; they just need to be cleaned. There is not much you can do to facilitate growth other than leaving the hair alone because black hair is extremely fragile. Besides, why does a boy need long hair???

Oh, and an additional two cents:
Never ask a bald headed person how to grow hair, chances are if they knew they wouldn't be bald :O)

How wonderful! I like what I see.
My two cents (I always have it unless it comes to paying a parking meter... I got a ticket ;O( )
From what I've learned from LHDC is that our hair is always growing. So your three year olds hair is growing, he is struggling with retention (correct me if I'm wrong LHDC). So maybe the 3 C's will help? Cleans, Condition, and...hmmm, what's the other one lol
Get a nice leave in conditioner, oil his scalp, condition his fuz, seal in the moisture with oil and watch his hair flurrish.
I am getting my daughters section of hair where my neice cut it to grow by tying a black rubber band around it. I don't care what NO Body say, black rubber bands grow hair!

Hey, I made the blog :-)
I decided to skip the sulfer for now because it doesn't smell good when we snuggle their heads. I decided instead to try a bit of grapeseed oil. I'd been using it on my 4 yr old's eczema outbreak on his middle back and it cleared up in a week. I tried a few drops a day for a week on 3 yr old's fuzzy head and within 2 weeks, his hair was long enough to tangle. He now sports a cool big-boy hair cut (courtesy of Daddy) and is learning to tolerate me chasing him around with oily fingers and a brush in my hand LOL.
