As a mother of 2 daughters, from day one, I have done my best to instill in my girls appreciation and LOVE for their hair. You will not find my girls' hair heat straightened on a normal, regular basis and you'll NEVER find it chemically processed. You will find their hair in braids, twists, puffs, and a whole lot of other creative hair styles that let their natural "puffiness" show.
My girls don't mind their hair being big. They don't care that their hair is coarser than their classmates. When I ask them "who has the best hair in your class?" - knowing there are no toher Black girls in their class - both of them CONFIDENTLY say "ME!"
My husband and I strive and go out of our way to find books with characters who look like our girls, not just the skin color, but the hair texture, too! We strive and go out of our way to find dolls whose skin and hair looks like theirs.
Are we doing too much?
