Weaves and braids may contribute to a type of permanent hair loss that appears to be common among black women, a new study has found.
More than one-quarter of the 326 black women who participated in the study had hair loss on the top of their scalp, and of those women, 59 percent had signs of central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, or CCCA, a poorly understood form of baldness that begins at the crown of the head and leads to scarring.
For many years, CCCA was known as "hot comb alopecia" because it was attributed to the use of hot combs to straighten curly hair. That appears to be a misnomer. Made famous by my favorite hair guru, Wanakee Pugh, the definition of a protective style is a hair style where the ends of the hair are protected/tucked away, therefore unexposed to the air & elements.

I recorded this vlog the day after I did my final big chop - February 8, 2011. I posed a question at the end of this video, is what I did considered a "big chop" why or why not?
After posting this video on my YouTube channel last night - February 21, 2011, I've gotten some very good feedback as to how some people feel about the "big chop".
In my opinion, a "big chop" is when one cuts or chops a significant amount of their hair's length.

They say women with long hair are afraid of change and women who wear an afro are bold....what do you think?
Just like the curly haired woman, a gal with an Afro is proud of her natural locks and doesn’t seek to change it. It’s a strong, bold ’do, probably worn by a woman with the same qualities.
